        CURRENT STUDENTS
        This section covers the academic calendar of the university, academic issues including course categories, class enrollment, grades, credits, graduation requirements etc. for current students of different programs, so that students of different programs will be able to have a brief view on the study life of the university. We hope all current students would take the most advantage of university resources, make each moment count and enjoy studying at DMU.
        Degree Students

        Academic Schedule
        Dalian Maritime University’s academic year is comprised of two semesters: the Spring Semester and the Autumn Semester. The duration of each semesters is usually 20 weeks each, having their last 2 weeks scheduled for course reviews and examinations.
        Every year, the new academic year usually starts from end of August or beginning of September which is the start of Autumn Semester. The Spring Semester usually starts from end of February or beginning of March.
        Every year, the summer holiday usually starts from middle of July which lasts for about 5 weeks. The winter holiday usually starts from middle of January which lasts for about 7 weeks.

        Study Duration
        The basic study duration is 4 years for undergraduate students, 2 years for non science and engineering major master’s degree students, 2.5 years for science and engineering major master’s degree students and 3 years for doctoral degree students.
        International students can apply to extend study duration with undergraduate students’ maximum study duration as 6 years (including suspension schooling period), master’s degree students’ maximum study duration no longer than twice of their basic study duration and doctoral degree students maximum study duration as 8 years.

        Classes, Credits and Graduation Requirements
        After registering, international students are advised to find out about their programs’ required courses and the total number of credits that they must complete in order to graduate. In principle, international students (except for Chinese language training students) share the same classes and graduation requirements as Chinese students, while some foundamental courses being opened to international students especially. Every 18 academic hours equals to 1 credit.
        Generally speaking, classes of Dalian Maritime University are composed of two categories: Compulsory Courses and Optional Courses:

        Compulsory Courses are the courses that are required by the students’ training plan, which students must complete in order to fulfill their programs’ graduation requirement. The Compulsory Courses include General Courses,Disciplinary Courses and Stream Courses.
        Optional Courses are the courses that students can choose according to students’ training plans as well as their personal interests. The Optional courses for undergraduate international students are composed of Restrictive Optional Courses(including General Courses and Stream Courses) and Free Optional Courses.
        Since the requirements of courses and credits vary from one program to another, postgraduate international students should follow all the academic activities required by the training plan made by their supervisors, and undergraduate international students should carefully read their own training plan, choose courses and make an reasonable and effective study plan accordingly.
        Graduation Requirements for Undergraduate International Students:
        Within the required study duration, finish all courses and credits required by the training plan and pass the graduation thesis oral defense. Total credits required is usually 180.

        For Example:
        Since the credit requirements very from one major to another, take an 2015 batch undergraduate international student of Financial major for example:
        Total credits required for graduation: 180 credits.
        Credits of Compulsory Courses:116.5 (including 99.5 credits for theoretical courses and 17 credits for practical courses)
        Credits of Restrictive Optional Courses: 48.5 (including 40.5 credits for theoretical courses and 8 credits for practical courses)
        Credits of Free Optional Courses: 15 credits.
        Graduation Requirements for Postgraduate International Students:
        Within the required study duration, finish all courses and credits required by the training plan and pass the graduation thesis oral defense. After registration, postgraduate international students should contact their supervisors on time and finish course selection and thesis under the guidance of the supervisor.



        Registration and Class Enrollment
        • Registration
        Students should register within the required time of each semester.(Please pay attention to the notice put by International Education College at the end of each semester regarding the registration time)
        Students must register in person and have already paid their tuition fees prior to their registration. Those who haven’t finished payment of tuition fees can not register. The registration period generally takes place during the first week of each semester.
        New students should go to Admission Office of International Education College for registration. Old students should go to Student Affairs Office of International Education College for registration.
        If a student cannot register on his/her designated time of registration, he/she is required to apply for a leave of absence in advance. For those who failed to register on time and did not apply for a leave of absence, their absence will be recorded as an act of truancy or an unexcused absence in their attendance record. Students who have not register two weeks after their designated day of registration will be dismissed from the university.

        • Class Enrollment
        Undergraduate international students should choose classes according to requirements of their training plans.
        The time of choosing classes for undergraduate students is usually during the last 2 weeks of the previous semester and 1st week of the new semester. During the time of choosing classes, undergraduate students can log onto Jiao Wu System
        http://202.118.88.140/ to choose classes. From the 2nd of week of the new semester, the system will be closed and classes that have been chosen can not be changed. If a student drops a class halfway through the semester, as well as, if he/she does not take the appropriate tests or exams for a class, the university will consider the student to have failed the course and thus will be recorded in his/her transcript.
        Postgraduate international students should contact their supervisor after registration to choose classes under the guidance of the supervisors.



        Attendance & Excused Absences
        Attendance
        Students’ attendance is taken and recorded for all lectures, tests, examinations and other forms of academic activities that take place. If a student should miss any of the above academic activities, he or she must apply for an approval for excused absences in advance. Unexcused absences are considered as acts of truancy. Students who have been absent for a third (or more) of the total number of a course’s classes are not eligible to sit for the final exam for that particular course. Furthermore, these students will receive a zero grade for that particular course.


        Examinations & Grades
        Examinations
        International students must sit for all the quizzes and exams of their courses. If they should miss an exam/quiz because of illness or other special reasons, they should apply to Academic Affairs Office of International Education College in ahead of time with certain proves for a make-up exam/quiz. The course teacher will put the exam result as Supplementary Exam after students application being approved by College of the major as well as Academic Affairs Department of the university. The Supplementary Exam will be conducted the same time as Make Up Exams with exam grades being deleted by 10 marks as final results. Students who are not given prior permission to miss an exam/quiz will receive a zero grade for that particular exam/quiz which they have missed.


        The Grading System
        Grades are given in the form of percentages. The passing grade is 60% and credits will be given. Some courses are graded by five categories: Excellent (90 and above), good (80-89), intermediate (70-79), pass (60-69) and fail (less than 60). All grades will be accounted for the students’ academic units. Grades allocated for classroom participation and performance, homework, quizzes and midterm exams are counted towards the students’ cumulative final grade. The final exam only makes up a part of the final grade.
        Regarding the calculation of Grade Point Average (GPA), please refer to the following formula:
        Course credit grade point=course credit x grade point
        Grade point average=ΣCourse credit grade point
        Σ course credit


        Poor Grades and Academic Penalties:
        • Undergraduate Students who have maintained less than 30 credits for one semester will be warned of being dismissed from the university. One that has been warned twice will be dismissed.
        • Master’s degree student that have failed two degree courses after retake will be dismissed from the university.
        • Doctoral degree student that have failed one degree course after retake will be dismissed from the university.



        Examination Discipline
        Students who are caught cheating during exams will receive a zero grade for that particular course and will be recorded and penalized according to regulations from the university.
        Students who have committed acts of academic dishonesty such as plagiarism will be warned or even dismissed from the university.



        Changes in Program
        Postgraduate and undergraduate students that wish to extend study duration, suspend, stop their study or transfer to other departments should refer to related regulations of the university.
        Graduation, Completion of Program & Degree
        The Certificate of Graduation will only be awarded to the students who have successfully completed their program, maintained enough credits, finish graduation thesis and oral defense and have fulfilled their graduation requirements. Degree Certificates will be issued to those who meet with the degree awarding requirement.
        Undergraduate Students who have not fulfilled their programs’ academic requirements by the end of their study period and lack less than 18 credits will be issued Completion Certificates.
        Postgraduate Students who have maintained enough credits but failed in the thesis evaluation or oral defense will be issued Completion Certificates.



        Student Identification Card
        Degree students will be given student card of Dalian Maritime University after they have registered.
        Degree students’ student cards are issued by Academic Affairs Office of International Education College. If the student card is lost, the student should go to Dalian Evening News to report the loss and go to Academic Affairs Office of International Education College with the proof to apply for a new one.
        The student card is an import ID card. Students are not allowed to lend and borrow student cards.



        Student E-card
        Student E-card is made by E-card Center of the university. It’s made free for the first time and will take 20 RMB for re-make.
        Transcript
        Students can go to Academic Affairs Office if they need formal transcripts.
        Procedures of Leaving the University
        Graduating international students should obtain a “Form of Leaving the University” from Academic Affairs Office within required time after they have finished their study and finish the following procedures:
        (1) settle all related issues with the college where your major is affiliated to;
        (2) cancel the student card and e-card;
        (3) returned books to library and postgraduate students upload theses to library’s website;
        (4) settle related financial affairs;
        (5) if living in the dormitory, check out and return keys;
        (6) receive transcript and certificates;


        Note: Students should leave the university within 2 weeks upon graduation or study completion. Those who leave the university without finishing above mentioned procedures will not be issued transcripts or certificates.
